Peer Review Instructions

As we’ve discussed, writing is re-writing, and revision is the foundation of all strong writing. To revise successfully, you need to come to your draft with fresh eyes, which can sometimes be difficult. To help you get a different perspective on your writing, we’ll conduct peer review sessions for each of the four major papers. You will read and respond to two of your classmates' papers and then reflect on your classmate’s comments on your paper. You’ll use those comments and your own reflection to revise your paper.

The initial peer review session will take place outside of class, using Box. You will read and annotate your classmates' papers using the annotation features in Box. You will then reflect on your classmates' feedback and discuss your comments with your classmates in class.

Steps for successful peer review

Upload two copies of your paper to the appropriate Box folder

Locate the Box folder for the paper's peer review ("Paper II Peer Review," for example). Create two Box Notes in the folder. One Box note should have your name and your first peer reviewer's name in the filename, and the second copy should have your name and your second peer reviewer's name in the filename (for example: "yourname_reviewer1name_paperii" and "yourname_reviewer2name_paperii). Copy the text of your paper and paste it into each Box note. If you are in a group of two, you only need to create one Box Note in the folder.

Read and annotate your classmates' papers

Refer to the peer review schedule to determine whose papers you will review in each unit, and find the file labeled with your name. The Box folder for each peer review contains a file called "Peer Review Instructions." Read your classmates' papers and use the annotation and commenting features in Box to annote the papers according to the instuctions in the file.

To receive full credit, you must have completed your annotations by the date indicated on the peer review schedule.

Read your classmates' annotations and reflect on their feedback

Before class on Wednesday, review your classmates' annotations. After you've reviewed the feedback, fill out this form with your reflections about the feedback. Both you and your instructor will receive a copy of your responses.

Discuss your feedback with your classmates

In class on Wednesday, discuss your papers as a group. What suggestions do you have for your classmates? What questions do you have for them about your own paper?

Grading

You will receive up to 2 points for peer review; 1 point for submitting your paper for peer review by the deadline, and 1 point for participating fully in the peer review process.

Peer review schedule

To ensure that you get the widest range of feedback on your papers, you will work with a different group of your classmates for each paper's peer review session. Consult this peer review schedule to determine when each step of the peer review process should be completed.
